From Oct. 24-26, the Collegiate Network's Western Division assembled in Scottsdale, Arizona, for the annual divisional Editors Conference. Students representing member papers ranging from the Michigan Review to the Oregon Commentator spent the weekend attending sessions aimed at improving their reporting, production, design, and management skills. The best student-reporters were encouraged to consider careers in journalism. Featured speakers included Martin Singerman, senior advisor at Newscorp; Mark Davis, vice president for strategy at the San Diego Union-Tribune; John Miller of National Review; Victorino Matus of the Weekly Standard; Robert Robb of the Arizona Republic; and Chris Casacchia of the Phoenix Business Journal.
Kevin O'Rourke, editor of The Sentinel at Ohio State, was awarded the Buckley Prize for Excellence in Campus Reporting. The CN's Eastern Division papers will convene in Charlotte, N.C., from Nov. 7-9.
